Canada is the top destination for most international students worldwide. Every year, millions of students intending to study in Canada to get the best education and access our luxurious colleges and universities.

If you’re interested in studying in Canada, you’ll need to get a Canadian study permit, which primary purpose is to serve as a student visa for the length of your stay. The study permit grants legal authorization for a person to study in a designated Canadian institution.

Study Permit
How it works

There are specific guidelines and requirements for prospective students to consider once they decide to study in Canada. When you apply for a study permit, specific eligibility requirements must be met. Certain conditions also need to be met throughout your time here in Canada.

Most post-secondary studies commence in September and January, while several programs may offer intakes outside of these dates. You need to contemplate entry dates, application deadlines, student visa processing times, and basic English language requirements to complete your application. Canadian colleges and universities throughout the country have a variety of summer language courses, ongoing education, and exchange programs.

While most foreign nationals require a study permit, if your course is less than six months or you’re a minor, you’ll only need a visitor’s visa to enter Canada. Otherwise, to register for a study visa, you’ll first need an acceptance letter from an approved provincial or territorial institution. There are over 98 universities and colleges and universities in Canada to host international students. To get your application package started, you’ll need to answer a few questions on the CIC website to determine your eligibility.

You must consider two sets of requirements when you apply for a Canadian study permit: eligibility requirements and requirements during your stay.

You must adhere to the following eligibility criteria to apply for a study permit:

You must have an acceptance letter and proof of financial support to cover the cost of your tuition for the first year of study and living. Currently, 10 000$ CA is necessary for your stay on top of your tuition fees every year.  The funds can be under a friend’s or family member’s name, and a document such as a bank draft or bank statement will be necessary. The extensive supporting form must also be submitted and may vary from country to country.

Immigration officers preserve the right to refuse study permits if they feel an applicant hasn’t met all the requirements. It’s precious to have a qualified immigration representative review your application before your online submission. Unless you are from the United States, you’ll also need to prove you have a valid passport that allows the re-entry into your country of origin.

Some applicants may need to pass a medical exam or a police check before submitting their application. If you have a criminal record, you won’t be admissible and may be asked to provide a police clearance to prove your history.

When your study visa is approved and you arrive as a new international student, you must meet specific requirements to maintain the validity of your study permit.

You must continuously be enrolled in your learning institution and make progress towards the competition of your program. You also must respect any conditions implied on your study permit and leave Canada when your permit expires. If you’d like to work during your stay, you may work up to 20 hours during each semester and full time during the summer and holidays without requiring a work permit.
